Special Needs

At Happy Hour we will assess your personal requirements. For many you may only require:

  • a driving school car with automatic transmission
  • a steering ball on the wheel
  • power assisted steering.

If you have severe disabilities that would require more complex adaptations there are many Centres in the UK offering advice. Please contact us for further advice.

IMPAIRED HEARING

Deafness will not be classed as a driver disability. There are no restrictions placed on a full licence when you have passed your test. It will, however, be of benefit to disclose this when applying for your driving test. This means the driving examiner will be properly prepared.

If you are deaf or have hearing difficulties you can ask to take the theory test in British sign language (BSL). The BSL interpretation will run alongside the standard test questions and answers. If you do not use BSL, an interpreter can be taken into the test centre, this facility needs to be pre-arranged through the theory test customer services section.

THE DRIVING TESTS

When applying for the driving test you should give as much information as possible about your disability. The time allocated will be double the normal time, so you will have an additional 40 minutes extra. This time will also help your examiner when completing his paperwork regarding your disability or the special adaptations to your vehicle. Once qualified any restrictions noted by the examiner is then itemised on the driving licence.

As of 4th October 2010 your driving test will include an Independent Driving Section

 Legal Requirements

Driving Licence

Before you can drive a car on a UK public road you must have a valid provisional driving licence. In the UK you must be 17 before you can obtain a provisional licence (16 if you are currently eligible for Higher Rate Disability Living Allowance). You can find out more from the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA) or by contacting one of Happy Hour's School of Motoring's advisers on our FREEPHONE number 0800 0 52 54 56 our phone lines are open outwith normal office hours.

Eyesight

If you need glasses or corrective lenses to meet the requrements listed below, you must wear these every time you drive. You should be able to read the old-style number plates from 20.5 metres or the smaller new-style plates from 20 metres. New-style plates are easily identifiable, starting with two letters e.g. AB51 ABC. Your Happy Hour instructor will test your eyesight from the outset, and then at various times before your practical driving test.

YOUR STEP BY STEP GUIDE

Step 1: The Theory and Hazard Perception Tests

Learner drivers must sit and pass the theory and hazard perception tests prior to booking the practical driving test.

This can be booked online through the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) website www.dsa.gov.uk or by contacting the Happy Hour office.

The test is in two parts, and practice materials are available through the Happy Hour office, your Happy Hour instructor or from the DSA website or local bookshops.

YOU MUST REMEMBER TO BRING BOTH PARTS OF YOUR LICENCE WITH YOU TO THE TEST CENTRE OR YOU WON’T BE ALLOWED TO SIT YOUR TEST (If you have the old style paper licence, you must bring this together with your valid passport.)

If you have special needs, facilities can be provided for you by the DSA at the time of your test, including foreign language voiceovers, extra time, British Sign Language interpretation and translator assisted tests. Please see their website or contact them for more information.

We offer free theory and hazard perception training to all our pupils.

Step 2: The Practical Test

It is your Happy Hour driving instructors job to make sure you are ready for your practical driving test, therefore by the time you are ready to sit your test, they will have asked you to sit some mock driving tests, these are designed to reproduce the atmosphere of a test and will comprise all the essentials parts, including the show me, tell me element. This is done to familiarise you with the procedure you will face at the driving test centre.

Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions.

You will then move on to your practical driving test which will include some specific manoeuvres.

The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes.

Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises.

However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.

“I learned to drive with Happy Hour School of Motoring. I passed my test first time with 2 minor faults. It was a challenging but enjoyable experience. The support from my instructor and the back up from Happy Hour set me in good form and preparation for my driving test. My younger sister is now learning with Happy Hour and we would both highly recommend the company.”
